The Purpose Behind Weekly Home Watch Visits

Updated: Nov 3, 2023

It’s not surprising that a home watch company would recommend weekly visits to your home, but rest assured there is logic behind that recommendation. Understanding why weekly visits to your home are important will help you make an informed decision about your home watch needs, while you're away for extended periods of time.

Our customers have different home sizes, different needs, and are gone during different seasons, but 87% of our customers have weekly checks (or even more often in some unique circumstances) during their home absence. We recommend weekly checks as the best service package but will honor twice a month checks for certain homes (i.e., smart homes with good monitoring systems).

Anything less than twice a month is not a wise service offering for a home watch company, because if an issue sits for close to a month it really negates the benefits of home watch services. We would not want any home to sit unchecked for less than twice a month, including our own, so we do not in good conscience offer checks outside of weekly or twice a month.

We suggest weekly home checks as the best service recommendation for snowbirds or other homeowners who leave their home for more than two weeks at a time, mainly for the reasons below.

  1. Peace of Mind – Nobody wants the unexpected to happen, but everyone knows the saying “hope is not a strategy.” Hoping your home will be okay while you’re away for weeks or months at a time is not protection. However, having someone do a weekly walk around and through your home to check for irregularities gives you peace of mind while you’re away.

  2. Minimizing Damage When the Unexpected Happens – If there is an issue, the faster it is noticed, the faster it can be remedied, while minimizing the potential for damage and costs. Home watch companies don’t want the unexpected to arise, but know their purpose is to work with homeowners to provide solutions quickly when there is a problem.

  3. Insurance Claims – We recommend you check with your home insurance about their policies on home vacancy and absenteeism, but, depending on your provider, coverage can be denied if a problem sits for too long with no effort to correct or stop the problem.

  4. Top Priority Service – While all our customers’ homes are treated as though they are our own, if a unique situation arises in the area where our home watch customers need their homes checked quickly our weekly customers are first on our list. This could be situations such as a widespread power outage, a huge storm, or extreme cold or hot temperatures.
