Preparing Your (Indiana) Home if You are a Snowbird

Updated: Oct 4, 2023

When heading out of Indiana during the colder parts of the year, it is important to spend some time preparing your home for an extended absence. Homes of various types, sizes, and locations require different levels of attention, but every home needs some amount of preparation.

Things to consider as you make your list are:

  • The size of your home.

  • Do you have a basement?

  • Insulation - do you get extreme temperatures in parts of your home?

  • Is any of your plumbing exposed to an outside wall?

  • Are you in a wooded area? (Potential for rodents, tree limbs, etc.)

  • Do you have a pool or hot tub?

  • Will you be back and forth (or have visitors staying from time to time)?

  • Do you have lawn and snow removal services?

  • Have you recently changed the batteries in your alarm system, security cameras, and smoke detectors?

In our experience, customers who are snowbirds have different preferences in how they prepare their homes for a long-term departure, and you can find experts that suggest different protocols for extended absences. As a snowbird, getting your home ready for your absence includes an array of things from mail forwarding and service holds to sealing pantry items and turning off water supplies.

We have found that performing basic tasks to help your home weather the winter in conjunction with having a regular home visit to check your property is an assurance that if the unexpected does arise, it will not turn into a major problem.
